Model Citizen

I met up with a top film producer friend of mine tonight, in Spain, who invited me to go to the Cannes Film Festival for all the parties and champagne. That lovely thought is keeping me going right now.

Also in today's edition of London Girl, a picture of a top model I met today .... she was so gorgeous.

Aren't top models just so striking..... It’s quite incredible. It’s like you never tire of looking at them because they are so beautiful and perfect. A woman with a beautiful face is like looking at a sunset or sunrise – it evokes the same serene feeling.

A few years back I used to babysit the kids of a former top model..she was, and still is, the most beautiful woman I have ever seen, and she even took me to Miami once, where we stayed at the Delano hotel.  Before we went to Miami, she gave me loads of her clothes, some of which I still have today.
She took me shopping in Victoria Secret for a silk negligee, because she said that it drove men crazy (she was right). Everywhere she walked, she caused a commotion, as people stared at her beauty, height, elegance and killer legs.

In Miami, she once wore this incredible Cavalli Chinese dress – you know the yellow/gold one from the ads - combined with Yves Saint Laurent black platform mules. I don’t recommend  that you stand next to a supermodel on the beach, in a bikini, because they tend to be really tall, bronzed, toned, own five billion bikinis......just do the maths really --- but if you’re lucky, they tend to not be very ample in the breast department, which makes you feel better if you've got good rack. That'a also the one thing they actually get envious about too. STrange hey.

My First Margiela

I had a fashion orgasm today, as I treated myself to a pair of Maison Martin Margiela elbow-length fingerless leather gloves whilst out wondering in Paris.

The leather is so soft and buttery, that it’s positively  criminal.  Like a second skin, which molds to your every curve. We have all heard of sex on legs, but this is sex on arms.

These gloves have apparently sold out everywhere and this was the last pair in my size.  I remember spotting Carine Roitfeld sporting a pair and longing for them, and now they are mine by total fluke (I had no idea I was even in a Margiela shop because he is so fucking discreet).

This is a picture of Carine sporting them (the shop assistant told me that she loves wearing them - she also gave me a 15 euro discount, so only paid 195 EUROS)

During these recession times, there is nothing like purchasing something that will totally update your wardrobe, and Margiela has a certain myth about him. I am so proud of myself. I can slip on any jacket, roll up the sleaves et VOILA - An edge.
Trademark Martin stitch - which he uses on all of his garments. Better than any logo.
And discreet packaging  - such a cool maison

Donald Drap Jacket

I LOVE Rick Owens (and his wife Michelle Lamy) and will one day own one of his delectable soft leather deconstructed jackets. But until then, I am very happy with this drap jacket from REPUBLIC, which I purchased for £34 before hitting these shores (I was actually inspired to get it by a great blog post from Fashion Editor at Large).   If you are looking for a behind the scenes look at what is going on during London Fashion Week by the way, this is the place to go. I am gutted to be missing the Mark Fast show today.

The material is not revolting either and the colour is a nice north wales quary style slate grey.  I took these pics back in London, when I had  a mirror!

LOVE Magazine cover

LOVE the covers dude
A set of supermodels appeared naked in identical poses for the latest issue of LOVE, the uber cool biannual magazine headed by Katie Brand.
The magazine has produced eight different covers - one for each model - and has even printed their individual measurements, so that we can really get up-close and personal with their vital statistics.
LOVE's editor Katie Brand said: 'For this issue of LOVE, we took eight women who are generally acknowledged as the most beautiful in the world, got them to show off their bodies - widely regarded as the most perfect in the world - and photographed them all in exactly the same position for the cover.

'We did this to show how much they differed physically from one another, which is why we also printed their measurements."
I vote for LARA STONE, because she looks like a Helmut Newton Glamazon anyway

Supermarket introduces dress code for shoppers

Sometimes, you just can't make it up as good as the real thing.
Check this story out, apparently  chav-heaven supermarket mecca Tesco has introduced a dress code for shoppers in response to the  ever increasing number of women, particularly hailing from Cardiff, who  have taken to shopping in their nightwear after dropping their children off at school in the morning.  I wonder if this phenomena happens anywhere else in the world, or if it is a very Blighty-centred thing. The US have a monopoly on alien abductees,  but will  the UK  corner the  making-an-effort abductee market?
A store spokesman said: ‘We do not have a strict dress code but we don't want people shopping in their nightwear in case it offends other customers.
‘We're not a nightclub with a strict dress code, and jeans and trainers are of course more than welcome.
‘We do, however, request that customers do not shop in their PJs or nightgowns.
'This is to avoid causing offence or embarrassment.’
Of course,  we are not talking about women turning up in vintage slips, or La Perla silk pyjamas, or Kimonos. We are talking about those horrendous, almost adult-size children type PJs, with naive illustrations.  And to make things worse, they team them with socks and slippers. I mean how fucking lazy is that.
The Daily Mail - which is always on the look out for a pond life story -  managed to locate one of these PJ shoppers, who was sent packing today after turning up in her PJs again.
This is the truly bonkers soundbite she (pictured here in full regalia) supplied them with:
'I just don't understand it. I go in other shops in my pyjamas and they don't say anything.
'You used to always be allowed in Tescos. But not now, it is ridiculous and stupid. I've got lovely pairs of pyjamas, with bears and penguins on them. I've worn my best ones today, just so I look tidy.'
Versace would be turning in his grave...

Diana - what do u make of this? Live and let live or what? It's the socks with open-toed water absorbant slippers which killed me.

The Glunge Story: Rick Owens explained

I have been trying to put the whole Rick Owens and Michele Lamy thing into words - but words fail me really. So I found this great article which was published in the New York Times about 2 years ago, and  by CINTRA WILSON. It really sums things up nicely. It also seems that everyone is having encounters with Michele via a cafe (see previous post).

“SO, I was at Les Deux Cafés in Los Angeles a few years ago,” enthused Nancy, who wears Rick Owens as often as possible, and was telling me why. “I was sitting by the door in a halter top, shivering a little. And this drop-dead fabulous older woman comes in: tiny-skinny, smoking; wild, black witchy-woman hair; wearing this very clingy Morticia-Addams-meets-Ginger-Rogers look, with her skirt dragging on the floor. Gobs of big wonderful rings. She looks at me and asks in her French accent,

‘Are you cold?’ And she rips this absolutely incredible leather jacket off her body and throws it around my shoulders.”

“Wow.”

“Then she sashays away, looks at me over her shoulder, wags her finger and says, ‘Don’t forget, on your way out!’ ”
“Did she instantly become your role model for life?”
“Completely.

So, she turns out to be Michele Lamy, the owner of Les Deux. Everything she’s wearing is Rick Owens, because he’s her lover. She’s his muse. She’s significantly older, but he fell madly in love with her when he was a crazy twentysomething bisexual. I never wanted to take that jacket off!”

Rick Owens’s star began its vertical ascent as soon as Los Angeles stores began carrying his designs: drape-y, rough-looking creations in gorgeous materials, wrought into a style he has dubbed “glunge” (grunge plus glamour), which tends to give the wearer an appearance of emerging from the lips of a huge, slightly tattered flower.
His new boutique — big, white and stark — is, like a lot of Owens creations, still unfinished around the edges. But this blind spot has been turned into an advantage. If Mr. Owens were an architect, he would make beautiful ruins.
When I arrived at the shop, Nancy, in the spirit of Madame Lamy, was already swaddled in a long, lean sable coat, moaning with pleasure.
“How much is it?” she asked Antino Angel Crowley, one of Mr. Owens’s willowy, tattooed, beautiful employees. “It’s an apartment, right?”
“Basically,” Mr. Crowley replied. “It’s $65,000. Which isn’t bad, if you think about it.”
I tried it, and agreed: not bad. Actually, it was a poem.

“You wouldn’t need an apartment,” I said, half-joking. “This coat is like youth and sex and butter all at the same time. You could sleep on the sidewalk and you would never feel a lack. You wouldn’t even need love.” This coat might have humanized Leona Helmsley.

THE OWENS STORY
RICK OWENS designs are decidedly kinetic; the pieces are made to elongate lines of movement in three dimensions, whereas most clothing is spatially flat — conscious mainly in front and back, and best when standing still. The store employees, hanging around in these slouchy, body-conscious shapes, resemble a modern-dance company.

The mystique of Michele Lamy, a chanteuse with two gold front teeth, is evident all over, but especially in a shelf full of little vicious-looking rat monsters made from sable scraps.
“Those are stash bags,” Nancy whispered.
“How much?” Mr. Crowley asked Mr. Streng.
“They are five, I think.”
“Hundred?”
“Thousand.”
Formidable.

THERE is something both exhilarating and exhausting about super-hipness — its demands can inspire both admiration and a slightly desolate feeling. Hanging out on certain couches can seem as arduous as a camping trip.

The Owens-Lamy Paris home, the former headquarters of the French Socialist Party, was described by Paper magazine as “gargantuan” and “bunker-like.”
But the clothes, for all their Gothic fury, are deliriously feminine.
Mr. Owens has said he is inspired by Lou Reed’s music. This makes sense: crudely simple melodies sung in an unpretty voice, but suspended in the excruciating tension of an almost unbearably delicate softness and sensitivity.

This mood can create anxiety, like sitting under a lead-glass chandelier that would crash down if not for the brilliant efforts of a single heroic spider. But unsettling settings also inspire relaxed inhibitions, creating the possibility for sudden intimacies to occur between strangers.

Are you cold? Here!
The sable, mes amis, is on the inside.

Michele Lamy Rick Owens

Rick Owen is my favourite designer . Wearing his clothes makes me happy, and I work hard so that I can afford more, like one of his Biker Jackets.  I love the earthy tones he uses, and the warrior undertone he gives to his garments.  Apparently his fashion shows are epic and also the hardest to get into. The Rick Owens show is not about who's famous derriere is on the front row or make-up and hair trends, its all about the fierce clothes.
Anyway, behind every great creative man, there is a muse feeding into his genius, and for Rick Owens, it comes courtesy of his fashion legend wife and collaborator, Michele Lamy.  This woman, who is known within certain circles for her "good taste",  has the kind of sense of style that  only an emissary from a futuristic parallel  landscape inhabited by holograms of SAPES (Society for the Advancement of People of Elegance) could possess. Lamy  has the look of an urban Inca Queen - but even that concept does not do her justice.   Her jewellery collection looks like its been handpicked from the British Museum secret archives.

EVIL GLAMOUR
Her hands are testimony to her pre and post apocalyptic vision. Tattooed fingers coupled with henna-blackened nails,  a heady mix of mountain-dwelling Berber queen, steam punk and prophetess from the Sacred Prostitutes of Babylon crew.  Not bad for someone who used to be a lawyer.

As is customory with legends, there are a number of  myths about her  floating around:  some people reckon she is 1600 years old,  and also a gypsy, arms dealer and a witch. She was a stripper at some point and a philosopher too. Those two last facts are actually true.

Michele is  French, although she used to live in LA for ages running a hot nightclub/restaurant called Les Deux. A friend of mine told me that whilst she was in Paris for the shows, sitting in a cafe, she saw Michele  walk into the cafe looking super stylish and cool. Turning heads and captivating the space with her incredible presence.

This is a picture of  her taking the Eurostar with her daughter, Scarlett Rouge.

I think that you will all join me in agreeing that she is fascinating and that someone should pen her biography.

Fast Forward Fashion

The one to watch in 2010
Mark Fast, the softly-spoken Canadian cobweb knitwear master, will be launching a capsule collection for TopShop in February, which is very exciting news for us mortals who cannot afford the four digit price tag of his creations.

After his debut collection was met with critical acclaim and much name checking by Jefferson Hack three seasons ago, Mark Fast has gone from strength to strength.  With an upcoming explosive collection in the pipeline, a possible invitation to show in Paris and a lucrative TopShop collaboration, Mark is fast set to be the next Christopher Kane.

Model's Own

Top models such as Anouck Lepere and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley  have all been wearing his show-stopping  dresses on the red carpet - mainly from  the  very sexy  S/S09 collection, arguably his best collection so far (I still mourn the fact that I had to decline an invite to this show because I was out of the country).

Anna Friel Look Book

There is a difference between being gorgeous and being beautiful, stunning or even pretty.  Angelina Jolie is stunningly beautiful, Megan Fox is pretty similar to the former and Anna Friel is gorgeousness personified. In fact, I cannot think of a more gorgeous girl about town than her. So I put together a look book based on her West End stage door exists using my new polyvore collage toy.

Taking inspiration from the old Hollywood/Bright Young Things era for her evening look – complete with flapper dresses, bias-cut floor lengths and a Veronica Lake-style mame, Anna’s inherent sense of style is blossoming into its own at the moment.  I wonder if she has a stylist or what the deal is.

She was always gorgeous, but isn’t it crazy how good grooming (her stint in the US must have something to do with this), a good selection of clothes and a serene expression can turn a girl from pretty actress to stage star.

During the day, she keeps the look modern by wearing biker boots with her outfits  ( a trick Tamara Mellon likes to use as well), but maintaining immaculately 1940s style hair and crimson painted lips and perfectly manicured hands.  Note that she does not wear any jewellery or handbags –accessories are kept to the bare minimum, a trick Kate Moss used to pull off at the height of her Moss Clone fame.

Now Anna really is the one the watch this year. Fresh from starring as Holly Golightly in the stage adaptation of Breakfast at Tiffanys, she will soon star in a film London Boulevard alongside Ray Winstone, Colin Farrell, and Keira Knightley.

More famous across the pond for starring in that quirky drama Pushing Daisies, here in Blightly she is very much associated with that infamous girl on girl screen kiss which caused a national debate, back in the 90’s. In between causing controversy and looking like a cross between Rita Hayworth and Kate Moss, Ann has ranked up a number of awards for her stage and screen performances – achieving that incredible balance so many actors strive for.

This lady is ready for the big screen.

USA online bag shopping

Now - I am not much of a bag girl, in fact, unless it is a clutch for the evening, I try not to carry bags around. Today, I spent the whole day fleeting around town without a bag and it was so liberating.

However,  I do like a good clutch, and have had my eye on a this 1970's  German magazine clutch for some time now - and I reckon I should just purchase it. It costs something like $100 from a US vintage website.

The magazine clutch is a very 1970's phenomenon - which has recently been emulated by non-other than  Jimmy Choo. Check out the Choo version on the left . Not bad at all  but will cost at least  three times more than the vintage one, so I will pass on this one.

Another great evening clutch is this baby from Shanghai Tang called the Bauhaus Silk Clutch and retailing at $345. Which is not TOOOO bad considering.
Really love the art deco lines mixed in with the 70's colour schemes

But if your looking for truly wacky arm candy, you need to go back to the 1970's and nothing really beats this one really -  I mean this is the ultimate in spy wear. Nobody  is gonna want to get in your way if you go around town with this bag. It is called the retro vintage Dallas phone bag and dates from the 1970s and costs $300. The handle is like a phone.

But if the idea of going around town carrying a hotline to David Lynch sounds too fishy for you- there is always the Newell crawfish trap handbag. That's right, a 1970's replica of a crawfishtrap which was  used in the Florida Key's. This baby trapper will set you back $100, and comes fully lined, with two handles. I am finding it hard to see  it as a bag, it does not look very practical, more like a picnic basquet - but I am sure it is actually quite small, so could look cool. Anway

Sweet and Sour Lingerie

How cute is this set - it is an original 1940's American sweetheart lingerie piece. Very cute. It was made to lift the moral of women who's husbands were at war. A true Lingerie museum piece.

At the back, it reads:
Keep Your Pants On Honey: Until I Come Home. Off Limits

Rachel Zoe: From Asparagus to Zoebots

Now Rachel Zoe, the uber-stylist to Young Hollywood, is a controversial dame in the sense that the press have  ripped into her numerous times for allegedly popularising the size zero, big fuck-O glasses and huge-bag look which paparazzi shots of La Lohan and Co out on coffee runs helped turn iconic.

But people forget that before Zoe hit the Hollywood scene, there was no such thing as a covetable LA day-time look. It was all about juicy couture or dressing up to the nines back then. Zoe  updated and re-packaged (using all the great style references from the 70’s pool scene) and put the LA-look  back on the fashion lexicon.

Suddenly everyone loved the Jet-Set-Gypsy style she made famous and her clients went from fashion blah to fashionista du jour faster than you could steam an asparagus. Whereas editors  tended to profile London and NYC streetstyle in magazine look-books – thanks to Zoe, the  LA day-time look became the one to watch.

But then her clients started losing lots of weight and gaining lots of column inches for the wrong reasons, whihch triggered a vicious backlash against Zoe. In my opinion, I think  they all lost weight because they could not handle all the pressure theire new-found fashionista status bestowed on them, as well as  all the public dissecting of their look in magazines. That, and probably too much partying and general nerves. Having paparazzi following your every move is my idea of hell on earth, the pitts of misery. Having face time with people is hard enough.

The Asparagus Monologue
Anyway, back to the size zero controversy, I really don’t think it was Zoe telling her Zoebots:
"Listen to me you  Hollywood skank, you can never be too thin or too rich, don’t you follow any  of Coco Chanel’s  life mottos?  You were nothing before I came along and told you what arm to put a bangle on and how many millimetres from the elbow would work best for you  -  Do you want to go from O.C to fashion O.D? It’s not just food that has a sell by date you know  sister- Now stick another asparagus on the steamer skank."

A case of sour grapes
Things turned more sour for Zoe when one of her clients, the former professional best friend of Paris Hilton: Nicole Ritchie, called her a “raisin face” and accused her of only “eating steamed asparagus”  when they fell out a few years ago.  I imagine that the  attack stems from the fact that sun-worshipping Zoe likes to tan, but it is very rude to come out like that and diss someone so publicly, especially when they reinvented you as a fashionista and helped you escape from reality tv hell.

The revenge of the Zoebot
My first experience of the Zoebot look was back in 2006 or something when a Chelsea friend and I ended up in some bar in Chelsea for a drink and also to wait for her other Chelsea friend to join us so that they could both pop over to the Blue Bar.

When the other friend turned up – I was quite taken aback by the vision that walked in: all glamour and killer heels – a blonde in her mid thirties sporting a deep tan, expensive golden highlights, expertly tousled hair, as well as  funky  gold/pearl jewellery, finished off by white skinny jeans and a  plunging strappy top. It looked much better than it sounds on paper.

Back then, nobody else looked that Hollywood or wore white jeans in London, apart from Liz Hurley in magazine.

Then as I flicked through magazines over the coming months I realised that she was actually sporting the Rachel Zoe look. Spurred on by that memory and also because I recently saw Zoe commenting on fashion styles on the DVD extra section of MAD MEN 2, I decided to purchase her style book Style A to Zoe: The Art of Fashion, Beauty, and Everything Glamour.
Which I read in about 2 hours, whilst watching Lost Season 5.

So what’s the verdict?
The verdict is that I did not realise how many great Oscar looks Rachel was responsible for. In fact, most of the looks she puts together for her A-list clients attending the Oscars and other red-capret chin digs are incredible – that is her forte. Super stylish, perfect accessories and an overall very glam, fresh and come-basque-in-my-Hollywood-success  look.

You can also see how the people she styles for the Oscars know that they look good, and this comes across in the photographs. So the lady certainly is a great stylist, with a good eye, who excel’s in making her clients look like they have great taste.

However – that incredible skill of hers does not translate well in the book because the tone she adopts is a bit too condescending and alienating  and I am surprised her publishers did not change things slightly to broaden the appeal of the book. In fact, the book feels like it has been written for potential A List clients as opposed to your everyday person. That’s my impression anyway.

In terms of what I  have stored in my brain following the read:
**Drink a tall glass of water while you are putting on your make-up – is a good tip
**Accessories are good:  but if Coco’s  approach is take the last accessory you put on - off, what is Rachel’s mantra when it comes to knowing when to stop? This needs more clarification.

**Purchase more costume jewellery, preferably gold-looking .  For a person like me who can take things into the excess zones when do I stop pilling it on?  For example, in these shots dear reader, I pilled on the jewellery – but is this too much?
** Hide all cords and cables in your home, and put away electric goods in the kitchen (including steamer I imagine) - my man will think I am nuts if I hide the kettle.

** homogenise your clothes hangers, so they all look the same

**And that’s it.

So not a great deal. But I am not going to diss Zoe and her style book, because she gives good style.I think Zoe is cool.

How to wear over -the-knee boots

Trust ROGUE editrix, Carine Roitfeld, to make thigh-highs look totally elegant, effortless and sexy as hell. In fact, at 50 years-old, she looks hotter than people half her age.

Love the dark chocolate brown leather of her Louboutins- I am sure they are super soft and pliable.Gorgeous

Azzedine Alaïa shoe sale

GIANT BOOTS

Utterly gorgeous Azzedine Alaïa chamois boots.

When I saw these pop up on an online sale yesterday, reduced to about £500 from £1000, I started a cheap campaign on my fiance involving guilt, blackmail and all sorts to get him to purchase them for me to prove his love for one last time. I explained that in my culture,
anything from Alaïa is a normal dowry for the bride-to-be.

He told me that I was being "off the fucking map."
He also told me in a text message that he was "trying to manage a complete clusterfuck at work and your boots saga is starting to wear me down. And for your info I think they look like sexy giant boots."

By giant boots he means boots which look like something a giant would wear in those illustrated fairy tales - the ones with the buckle. Hardly!

Anyway, they sold out it in my size and every size this morning, much to his relief and my disappointment.

The
50% off Azzedine Alaïa shoe sale is still on http://www.theoutnet.com/
